Pharmacotherapy in old age: Objective and reality
Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur, Mainz
The fact that our population has an unprecedented life expectancy today is not least the success of medicine. However, ailments that occur in old age lead to a special medical challenge, especially with regard to pharmaceutical therapy. While pharmaceutical therapy is not different in old age, it is significantly more complex than in younger adulthood, since frequently a whole series of diseases must be treated. The pharmacokinetic conditions change based on the decreasing function of the liver and the kidneys as excretory organs, and organ sensitivity and the body's possibilities for homeostasis lead to more frequent complications, thereby placing higher demands on the treating physicians.
